“If you’ve lived here in Singapore for a long time you may have had the opportunity to see an early morning display of birds in birdcages. There are a few places in Singapore, where mostly old men come out with their birds. They hang up their cages together and create this really exciting display. You can image the buzz of birds singing and old men talking. While I love the delicate structure of a birdcage I always feel a bit sad seeing a bird inside a cage. So for this artwork I’ve filled my birdcage with spring flowers. The little sunbirds themselves I’ve placed on the outside of the cage where they are free to fly. The sunbirds motifs have been hand cut from a piece of Chinese silk. Sunbirds are probably my favourite bird here in Singapore. I love the delicate curve of their beak and their excited flutter. A traditional Chinoiserie pattern has been printed in the background in a soft sage & teal. Swallows in bamboo are placed in the top right corner, adding to the story of birds & foliage. Although we don’t really have obvious seasons here in Singapore, you can still bring in the birds & florals of spring into your home, anytime of the year!!”
